I’m so excited to finally have some Montessori shelves in our home!
As some of my regular readers may know, I have been working on my PhD in Child and Adolescent Development for the last five years. Well, this past weekend I finally graduated! Here is a picture of me about to walk across the stage for my diploma.
Now that I have graduated and no longer need to put so much focus on my dissertation, I am looking forward to spending more time with my kids. One of my goals has been to incorporate more Montessori learning into our homeschool preschool.
I decided to dedicate a blank wall in our office to building some Montessori shelves, thereby turning our office into an office/schoolroom.
I enlisted my husband to help out with this project. We went to The Container Store and bought a shelving system that we installed together.
And this is the final result! I’m so excited to have these Montessori shelves for our homeschool preschool!
When we installed these Montessori shelves I included two shelves up high for storage. To date, all of our supplies have been stored in a closet, but I have been adding new materials to our collection lately and was running out of room to store them all. So these extra shelves are already coming in handy.
I am using the highest of the low shelves to display books related to our learning theme. I currently have 4th of July themed books on display. Seeing the books on display like this has really captured the kids’ attention, and they have been begging me to read these books to them.
The bottom shelves are for the kids’ trays and other work materials. I have a mixture of 4th of July themed trays and traditional Montessori materials available for them right now.
I made the bottom shelves shorter than the top shelves in order to have some space for the kids’ work mats and for some vertical work materials like the Montessori pink tower.
So far the kids have been loving our Montessori work time. I’ll talk more about that in a future post. 🙂
