When my kids were a few years younger, we did a number of Montessori-inspired geography lessons that began with an introduction to land, air, and water.

If you are introducing land, air, and water – or if your kids are learning about transportation that goes on land, in the air, or in water – I’m happy to announce that I have created a printable set of Montessori Land, Air, and Water Transportation Sorting Cards.

This printable may be a great way to introduce the concept of land, air, and water for children who love planes, trains, cars, and other modes of transportation.

Note: You can find more Montessori geography activities on my Geography Unit Study page.

Following Montessori principles, these Land, Air, and Water Transportation Sorting Cards feature real photographs of actual modes of transportation that are designed to travel on land, in the air, or in the water.

My Land, Air, and Water Transportation Sorting Cards feature the following:

Six types of land transportation

  • car
  • bicycle
  • dirt bike
  • train
  • quad bike
  • snowmobile

Six types of air transportation

  • airplane
  • helicopter
  • glider
  • hot air balloon
  • biplane
  • space shuttle

Six types of water transportation

  • canoe
  • raft
  • submarine
  • surf board
  • sail boat
  • steam boat

To use this printable, simply print and cut out the three land, air, and water label cards and the 18 transportation picture cards.

I recommend printing on cardstock and/or laminating with an inexpensive home laminator for durability.

Note that the printable includes both a set of cards that have a line between the picture and the label (so you can separate the picture and label if desired) and a set of cards with no line between the picture and the label.

Have your child sort the transportation modes into groups under the appropriate category label as shown below.
