The American Thanksgiving holiday is celebrated each year on the fourth Thursday in November. The origins of this holiday are usually attributed to a fall harvest feast attended by both the Plymouth settlers and the Wampanoag Indians in Plymouth, MA back in 1621. Although a tradition of giving thanks after the fall harvest goes back thousands of years, Thanksgiving didn’t become an official Federal holiday in the United States until 1863.
In the United States, Thanksgiving is traditionally a day for families and friends to gather for a special meal and give thanks. Foods commonly eaten at this meal include turkey, stuffing, potatoes, gravy, cranberry sauce, and pumpkin pie. This holiday emphasizes gratitude and togetherness, in addition to eating a bountiful meal.
