With Thanksgiving quickly approaching, I wanted to create an activity that draws upon Thanksgiving themes while supporting the development of key academic skills.
Because my kids have been playing with rulers and tape measures recently, I was inspired to create something focused on measurement skills.
Ultimately, I created the printable you see described below, that asks kids to measure the height of several different objects using a ruler and then rank the objects they have measured from tallest to shortest.
The activity is fairly simple, the prep work is minimal, and yet kids will practice some key math skills.

With this activity, kids will work on measuring Thanksgiving-related objects with a ruler. Options are included to measure objects in both inches and centimeters. (Be sure to print the appropriate worksheet depending on whether you want your child to work with inches or centimeters.)
For example, kids will use the inches side of the ruler to discover that this turkey is 5 inches tall.
When measuring with inches, kids will also find that some objects are measured in half inches, such as these ears of corn that measure 3.5 inches tall.
When measuring objects in centimeters rather than inches, all of the measurements will be in whole centimeters rather than half centimeters.
The bunch of wheat pictured below, for example, measures 22 cm tall.
Kids will record their measurements on a worksheet. (Separate worksheets are included for inches and centimeters.)
After measuring all the objects, kids will rank them in order from tallest to shortest.
