Let me start by saying that the original intent of this activity was NOT to make reindeer poop. I had been hunting for ideas for Christmas activities for kids, and I had seen some glittered cinnamon ornaments that I thought would be fun to make. However, something went wrong with our ornaments. So after failing to do what we had set out to do, we used a little imagination to change the activity from a craft to sensory play.
This is the story of how we turned a failed project into a total success by making “reindeer poop.”
Per a recipe I had seen on another blog, we first added some cinnamon.
Next we added some apple sauce.
Then we added glitter.
Finally, we added some glue.
Then, we mixed.
But after mixing, it was too sticky. So we added more cinnamon and mixed some more.
But it was still too sticky, so we added even more cinnamon and continued to mix some more.
After using up all my cinnamon, it still felt too sticky, but we decided to give it a try. And indeed, it was too sticky to roll out properly.
And too sticky to make a good shape using our cookie cutters.
So eventually we concluded that we would have to give up on making glittered cinnamon ornaments. We were disappointed. 🙁
We put all the dough into a pile, and then I realized something.
Our mixture was the color of poop. Glittered poop. And only a magical animal would have glittered poop. A magical animal like a reindeer!
With excitement, I told the kids we had just made “reindeer poop,” and suddenly the activity had new life! No longer disappointed with our failed ornaments, the kids became totally engaged!
We made reindeer poop balls and poop logs and poop piles. The kids had so much fun and kept asking me to make new shapes of reindeer poop for them.
So all in all, while this project was a total failure in that we never did make glittered cinnamon ornaments, it was a total success because our whole family had fun doing a creative, imaginative, sensory activity.
