This week I’ve got a cute new Christmas tree craft with “snow” made from yarn.
This craft is really flexible in terms of the materials you use to make the tree and the colored overlay. The only “must have” item for this craft is white yarn.
This is a great craft for kids of all ages. Use it to explore different art techniques, different art tools, and also a bit of geometry as well.

To make this snow covered Christmas tree craft, you will need the following materials:
- Paper
- Something to color your paper: paint, crayons, markers, etc.
- White yarn
- Tape
- Scissors
Start with two sheets of paper, one slightly larger than the other.
The smaller paper will be your tree. Paint or color it green. (Alternatively, you can use green paper.)
For some of our trees we decided to use liquid watercolor paints with salt sprinkled on them to get a textured look. For other trees, we simply used our Kwik Stix solid tempera paints to create a green background.
There’s no right or wrong way to do this step. Have fun with it!
Next, take the larger sheet of paper and use paint, markers, or crayons to give it a color that contrasts nicely with the green of your tree.
Once everything is dry, cut a triangle in the larger sheet of paper.
Flip the larger sheet over and use tape to string white yarn back and forth across the cut out triangle.
This is what it will look like when you’ve added all your “snow” to the tree.
Tape the green tree paper to the back of your larger paper with the cut out.
Flip the project over and enjoy your snow covered Christmas tree craft!
This project lends itself so well to experimenting with different colors, different drawing mediums, and different art techniques.
Get creative, explore the materials, and enjoy!
