I developed a love for reading at a young age. As a child I would read for hours and hours. Books have educated me, provided entertainment, provoked laughter, and moved me to tears. I hope my kids will have as wonderful a relationship with books and reading as I have enjoyed throughout my life. Indeed, it has been so gratifying to watch my children’s love for books really blossom. Both of my kids love nothing more than cuddling up next to me or my husband to enjoy a story read aloud.
Although my passion for literacy began as a young girl, my professional and academic pursuits have also centered heavily on literacy. After college I worked for several years developing and implementing a reading program for struggling readers in 1st through 3rd grades. In that same job I also helped develop a parent-child reading program for Spanish speaking preschoolers. Academically, my PhD research was focused on language and literacy development among dual language learners.
With the activities I share below, my goal has been to share engaging, hands-on, and developmentally appropriate literacy activities for kids that parents, caregivers, and teachers can replicate at home or in the classroom.
Below are links to the literacy activities for kids and literacy printables for kids that have been featured at Gift of Curiosity. Click an image to be taken directly to the post related to each activity.
