I find playing games with my kids to be one of the best ways to engage them in learning. In the next installment of my 101 Ways to Teach the Alphabet Series I am sharing a printable alphabet game I call Letter Slap.

Letter Slap is a game that supports letter recognition skills. To play, you first identify a set of 3 to 5 “target letters” for your child to identify during the game. In the example below, the target letters were the five vowels.
We were playing the “easy” version of the game. In the easy version, the cards with the target letters have a different color than the cards with the non-target letters. In the advanced version, the cards with the target letters are the same color as the cards with the non-target letters. The game can be played with lowercase or uppercase letter cards.

To play, I shuffled the letter cards, then dealt the entire deck to my kids.

They took turns flipping a card from their pile over onto a stack in the middle.

When a non-target letter is flipped, nothing happens and the next person takes their turn.

But when a target letter is flipped. . .

The players must race to “slap” the letter!

The first one to slap the letter gets to keep the entire stack of cards. The winner is the person with the most cards at the end of the game.

Katie,
I have used the letter slap game in OT for years, but with a twist. Students choose between tall letters or hang down letters to help with placement and size of letters.
That’s a great adaptation of the game! Thank you for sharing.
