Learning the alphabet can be a lot of fun if you turn it into a game. So in this week’s installment of my 101 Ways to Teach the Alphabet Series, I’m sharing an alphabet game called Letter Kaboom! that your child is sure to love!

How to prepare a game of Letter Kaboom!
To prepare a game of Letter Kaboom!, you will need the following materials:
- Jumbo craft sticks
- Marker (a permanent marker may work best)
- Container to hold the sticks
Begin by writing letters on one end of the craft sticks. You can write all 26 letters or start with a smaller number that your child is familiar with.

For every 4-5 sticks that have a letter on them, make one stick that says “Kaboom!”

Put all the sticks – both those with letters and those that say “Kaboom!” – into a container with the blank end of the stick facing up.

Now you are ready to play Letter Kaboom!
How to play Letter Kaboom!
To play Letter Kaboom!, 2-4 players take turns selecting one stick from the container.

The player must say the name of the letter (or the sound the letter makes).
If the player can say the letter name (or letter sound) correctly, the player keeps the stick. If not, the player returns the stick to the container.

However, if the player draws a stick that says “Kaboom!”, he or she must return their entire pile of sticks to the container.

You may end the game after a certain number of turns or after a certain amount of time has elapsed. Or keep playing for as long as your child is having fun.
If you wish to play competitively, count up the number of sticks in each player’s pile. The one with the most sticks wins.
If you do not wish to play competitively, have all players give high fives and return their sticks to the container. Everyone wins when everyone has fun!
