A few weeks ago I shared a dot sticker printable designed to help kids match uppercase and lowercase versions of each letter. That printable was well received, so I decided to create another dot sticker printable focused on helping kids identify the initial sounds of words.
In the next installment of my 101 Ways to Teach the Alphabet Series I am sharing this printable and showing how I used it with my daughter.
This activity makes use of dot stickers. In general, I recommend using dot stickers that are at least .75″ in diameter. If the stickers are too small they become very difficult for young children to use.
There are four different versions of this activity that you can use. The first two versions have 26 pictures, one for each letter of the alphabet.
The second two versions have 10 pictures, two for each vowel sound. The vowel sounds printables include one for short vowel sounds and one for long vowel sounds.
My daughter still occasionally mixes up her vowels, especially the short ‘i’ and short ‘e’ sounds. So I first gave her the short vowel sounds version of the printable and 10 dot stickers with the vowels written on them. She worked to identify the vowel sound for each picture and then attach the appropriate sticker.
I next gave her the page with 26 pictures. She knows her letter sounds pretty well by now so this was not too much of a challenge for her.
But she sure did enjoy peeling and pasting the stickers on.
Although I designed the printable so kids could put the sticker right over the image, my daughter had a different idea in mind. She placed the dot stickers right next to each picture. Which of course was totally okay with me. 🙂
