Fireworks and 4th of July go together like peanut butter and jelly. Like salt and pepper. Like ketchup and mustard. Basically, it’s hard for me to conceive of 4th of July without fireworks! How can you get your kids in the 4th of July fireworks spirit?  Check out this simple fireworks craft you can make at home. In fact, you probably already have all the ingredients you need to make these simple salt fireworks!

Note: For more 4th of July activities and printables, see my 4th of July activities page.

We completed this craft over two days. On the first day, the kids used glue to draw the shape of their  fireworks.  We used a thicker cardstock paper for best results, but you can do this activity with any paper you have. Note that I also had the kids do everything on our work trays to help contain the mess.

XGirl drew some traditional and some abstract fireworks.

QBoy wanted to emulate a swirling firework he had seen in an online video about fireworks.

After “drawing” their fireworks in glue, the kids sprinkled a very liberal amount of salt on top of the glue. To facilitate the process, I put salt in two empty spice containers.

Then we waited a day for the glue to dry.

The next day, I squirted a tiny bit of our Colorations Liquid Watercolor Paints into our plastic paint palettes. (If you don’t have liquid watercolors you could also use food coloring or even fruit juice.)

Then I handed each kid a plastic pipette.  They used the plastic pipettes to suction up the liquid watercolor to drip onto their salt fireworks.

Amazement ensued as they watched how one drip of color on the salt slowly spread and spread and spread.

Then they got busy adding color to the rest of the fireworks as well.

And finally, QBoy decided to use his leftover liquid watercolors to paint his own fireworks. 🙂

Salt fireworks is such a fun craft! We also did fireworks recently, but no salt (and no mess :))

It’s true things have the potential to get a bit messy when making the salt fireworks, but the fun of shaking the salt onto the glue makes up for it. 🙂
