Today’s printable is a set of Constellation Pin Punching cards, which are a great way to help kids develop fine motor control while also learning about the constellations.
I first learned about pin punching activities when I was studying the Montessori method. To complete a pin punching activity, children use a pin puncher to poke holes around an image.
I previously created some Letter Pin Punching pages, and today I’m pleased to extend my pin punching printables collection to include 23 constellations from our night sky.
Note: Find more solar system printables on my Space Unit Study page.
For pin punching activities, we use and recommend a wood handled pin puncher paired with a high quality, thick felt mat, both from Montessori Services.
I set out these materials along with my Constellation Pin Punching cards one afternoon. I asked my kids if they knew what the pictures showed, and they knew right away they were constellations.
I showed them how to use the pin puncher to punch holes in all the “stars” on their constellations.
They got right on it, quickly coming to an agreement about who would get to pin punch which constellation.
As you can see from the images, using the wood handled pin puncher provides kids with a good opportunity to practice their pencil grip.
Once they finished punching holes in each card, we held them up to watch the light come through the holes.
