I have lived most of my life in areas with large Chinese populations, so Chinese New Year has always been something I’ve been around or even celebrated to various degrees.
I was certainly always jealous of my Chinese friends who received hong bao (lucky red envelopes) stuffed with money each year!
But of course, Chinese New Year is about more than just envelopes of money.
While I don’t pretend to know everything there is to know about Chinese culture, I do know that Chinese New Year involves many traditions and symbols.
For example, the Chinese consider red to be a lucky or auspicious color. As such, it is frequently used in celebrations in China, and many Chinese New Year decorations are red.
It is common for people to light fireworks during the new year celebrations as in olden times the loud noises were thought to scare away evil spirits.
Certain foods are commonly served for Chinese New Year as good omens. For example, the Chinese word for fish, ‘yú’, sounds very similar to the Chinese word for “surplus.” As such, fish is a dish that symbolizes prosperity.
